What’s the difference between DELF/DALF and TEF?

The DELF and DALF are official diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education, valid for life. The TEF, delivered by the CCI Paris Île-de-France, is a certification valid for two years and often required for immigration, citizenship, or academic purposes.

Who should take the DELF or DALF?

These diplomas are ideal for students, professionals, or anyone who wants a lifelong, internationally recognized French qualification.

What level of French is required to apply for French nationality?

To apply for French nationality through naturalization or marriage, you must demonstrate a B1 level. This can be done by providing an official certificate such as:

A valid TEF IRN (less than 2 years old),
Or a DELF B1 diploma

📌 Important: It is highly likely that starting January 2026, the required level will increase to B2. We recommend planning accordingly and contacting us for preparation options.

What is the TEF used for?

The TEF (Test d’Évaluation de Français) is required for:

Immigration to Canada or Québec
